HOW THE BRITISH HARMED THE WEST TO HELP THE NORTH

ROB PETER TO PAY PAUL: HOW THE BRITISH HARMED THE WEST TO HELP THE NORTH By Ajiroba Yemi Kotun  LONG POST ALERT! "A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul.” – George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) PEOPLE generally become affected when they are not secure. They get unhinged and unsettled. As such, the Northerners were unhinged and unsettled by the liaison between Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe (1904-1996) and Chief Obafemi Awolowo (1909-1987). They quickly derided their hookup as an “unholy alliance” and pooh-poohed it as "sweetness and light" [Continued from “When Greeks Join'd Greeks: Why Northerners Planted their Feet in their Region”]. That’s how the truncated House of Representatives stayed the course and proceeded with unanimity to pass the motion for adjournment. Home is where the heart is; there is no place like home. Soon after, the remaining members, having successively put a poke in the self-government wheel, called it a day and orga

THE ISSUE OF BRIDE PRICE IN IGBO LAND

Reactions trail court judgment condemning Igbo custom on fatherhood WHAT qualifies a man to lay claim to paternity of children born to him, according to Igbo custom and tradition? This contentious issue was triggered by a recent judgment of an Akure Magistrate Court which declared as “barbaric, evil and ungodly,” a part of Igbo custom which denied a father access to his children for reason of non-payment of bride price to the wife’s family. Ruling on a divorce case between Prophet Theophilus Obayan and his estranged wife, Prophetess Chibuzor Lilian, Magistrate Segun Stephen Rotiba of Akure Magistrate Court, Ondo State, condemned that aspect of Igbo custom as unacceptable. Prophet Obayan is a Yoruba while his estranged wife is Igbo. They were heads of a church located in Ladipo, Lagos State. According to reports, Prophetess Chibuzor left her husband to marry one of his spiritual sons, Abua Obi, and changed her children’s surname from Prophet Obayan’s to Obi, the new husband on the gro

IMPACT OF EDUCATION ON OUR YOUTHS

Image
Impact of Education on our Youths Every child has the right to education and must be able to read and write as they grow. This is statement that every nation in the world has in its constitution. Over the last few decades, knowledge has become a pre-requisite of new production paradigms, and education has become an essential factor in the modernization of production systems and the economic behavior of individuals.  Human capital theory is based on the notion that education is an investment which produces income in the future. Consequently, differences in productivity arising from differences in education cause a hostile effect on the economy. Demand for education is a function of rational human behavior. This, eventually contributes to a better, easier lifestyle. The formidable repertoire of the contemporary era is how education effects our youth. The progress of a nation is highly dependent upon its youth, it is the youth which makes it rise like a shining star or fall like a dull mete

THE RECENT ABORTED CRISIS WITH NTEJE

THE RECENT ABORTED CRISIS WITH NTEJE "When you do things the right way, you have nothing to lose because you have nothing to fear." © Egwu Akonuche--By Zig Ziglar "I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear." © Egwu Akonuche--By Nelson Mandela According to Arjen Boin, a transboundary crisis can be defined as one that: effortlessly exceeds geographical, policy, cultural, public–private and legal boundaries that normally enable public managers to classify, contain and manage a crisis. It escalates rapidly and mutates constantly, creating confusion about causes and possible consequences. It ends up on many administrative tables, but it is not obvious which of those tables is or should be “in the lead.” These features make a fast and adequate response difficult, to say the least. From the perspective of applied history, the trajectory of transboundary cris

The State Of Our Roads

Deplorable Roads: Kalu Proffers Alternative Solution dora Orizu   writes that the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has come up with a novel path of addressing the deplorable state of the nation’s roads. On August 21, 2023, at a grand reception held in Abuja in honour of Senator David Umahi as Minister of Works, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, floated a novel idea to, among other things, consider Roads Investment Fund for infrastructural development.  The call however came on the heels of the  present dire economic situation that has affected the nation’s cash flow. Put succinctly, road infrastructure is very critical to the socio-economic development of any nation. No matter the level of development a country has attained, roads play an important role in the process. However, there is no gainsaying that Nigerian roads considered the largest road network in West Africa are either poorly ma
