2 Recent Indications That APC May Not Win Anambra Governorship Election Despite Support From Buhari

In Anambra State, November 6, 2021, is a date with destiny. On that day, hundreds of thousands of voters will troop out to choose a new Governor that will pilot the affairs of the state for at least another four years.

Some of the big names on the ballot include Ifeanyi Uba representing YPP, the Peoples Democratic Party has Victor Ozigbo, Andy Uba will fly the flag of the All Progressives Congress while Chukwuma Soludo is All Progressive Grand Alliance’s flagbearer.

These four are some of the biggest names in Anambra politics, but analysts have favoured Soludo to win because his party, APGA, has ruled Anambra State since 2006 and it has strong grassroots support. However, some people have opined that APC has a good chance to topple APGA because it is the ruling party at the federal level and also because President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed to personally support and campaign for its candidate, Uba.

Yet, two events have happened recently that clearly showed Anambra APC is weak and does not stand a strong chance to win the election. In this article, I will highlight the two events and why they may affect APC’s chances on November 6, 2021 election.

Anambra APC had a very rancorous primary and members have refused to move on

In the media, APC has spoken a lot about efforts to reconcile factions in its camp, but if reports emanating from the party are anything to go by, then the party is far from united. Some of those who lost out in its primary are still raging, they have refused to heal and truly reconcile. According to media reports in The Nation Newspapers, there is still deep-seated animosity and anger among some of the members, and there may not be enough time to resolve the issues before the election.

That means APC might go into the governorship election a divided house and this might confer an advantage on its rivals.

Stella Odua’s Constituency refused to join her in APC

Another recent sign that APC may be overrating its chances at the November polls is the fact Anambra North which Stella Odua (who freshly decamped to APC represents) have denounced her for dumping PDP for APC. Recall that during her public defection she said that her constituency supports her decision and they were going to vote APC’s candidate in the governorship poll. Well, that may not be the case.

According to a recent report in Daily Independent, leaders and members of the Anambra PDP have not only refused to join her in her new party, but they have also pledged their support and loyalty to PDP’s candidate.

In other words, they have told the Senator that she is on her own.

These may constitute a major setback on APC’s election strategy in Anambra State.
